One glance at the map of Cyprus shows the dominant position of the Troodos mountains; set at its very centre, reaching almost 2,000 metres, their peaks survey every part of the island, and on a clear day you can enjoy breathtaking panoramas. In March, from Olympus point, skiers on their slopes can clearly see sails dotted on a sea of the deepest blue. Perhaps the churches and monasteries are the most famous features of the region, whether it is for their often overwhelmingly beautiful setting and architecture; or for the art treasures they contain, in the form of Byzantine icons and frescoes. Nature trails have been recently developed extensively, in particular around Troodos resort, and range from three to nine kilometres in length; they provide a wealth of objects of interest, to the botanist, naturalist, ornithological expert - or to just plain nature lovers! Species of flower or plant can be found which are not merely native to Cyprus only, but are peculiar to the Troodos region alone.

The Forestry Department has created a number of trails carefully designed to cover areas of rich natural vegetation and cultural interest. They have been landscaped on gentle gradients and are, as a rule, circular so that all age groups can easily use them. In many cases, there are signposts in place, to indicate the starting point of the trail, as well as flora and geology features along the route. Although walking in Cyprus can be enjoyed throughout the year, the recommended seasons are during late Autumn (November) and spring, when the Cyprus rural and forest areas are at full bloom.
